Get Involved with Tioga County Habitat for Humanity
Alone, there is little we can do. Together, there is little we can't do. Whatever your skill,
whatever you would like to learn, you can make a difference helping your neighbors out of
substandard housing and into a simple, decent place to live.
Tioga County Habitat for Humanity receives no Federal aid, nor is it subsidized by HFHI.
Our funding, our workers, our materials, and the sites we build on come from the generosity of Tioga
County neighbors willing to give a neighbor a hand up, not a handout.
It takes more than hammering nails to build a house. We have many different areas in which to
volunteer. In addition to physically preparing the site, building the house, and raising money
for Habitat, there are many committees that work behind the scenes that are critical for a build
to be successful. Together all of the groups come together to build a home.
Building: Oversees all aspects of house building. Activities include house design,
planning and building, obtaining necessary permits, soliciting professional help and
donations of building materials, purchasing materials, training volunteers in building
skills, and on-site management of the whole project to be sure that volunteers always
have a qualified leader on the job.
Family Selection: Evaluates applications, screens and selects families for recommendation
to the Board of Directors. Teams of volunteers interview homeowner applicants at home,
distribute application forms and Habitat information throughout the community, provide
initial orientation to the Habitat homeowner. Maybe the toughest job you'll ever love to do!
Family Support: Provides one-on-one support to families during construction and the
first year of home ownership. They help with life skills needed for successful home ownership
such as budgeting and home maintenance.
Fund Raising: Sets annual fund raising goals, plans and executes special events,
oversees individual donor campaigns, coordinates foundational contacts and grant proposals.
Public Relations: Informs the public about Habitat for Humanity. Activities include
public speaking, publishing newsletters, writing press releases, updating websites and
participating in community events to promote Habitat's mission.
Volunteer Support: Works closely with other committees to schedule volunteers for
construction and non-construction work. It recruits and responds to volunteers, keeps records
of their participation and provides recognition for volunteer efforts.
Site Selection and Preparation: Locates and evaluates potential building sites, arranges
for necessary environmental studies and property surveys, and works with the Building Committee
to assure that a building site is workable.
Construction labor: Volunteer time to actually build the house. Picking up a hammer and
working with other volunteers to build the house. Areas of expertise can include electrical,
plumbing, framing, drywall, roofing, etc. Experience is great, but the only requirement is a
willingness to learn.
Non-Construction labor: Volunteer time to support the team with activities such as advertising,
delivering designing posters, working fundraising events, and seeking out additional resources
for Habitat. Again, no experience is necessary, just a desire to learn and contribute to the cause.
Presently are biggest need is for volunteers to help support our fundraising effort.
