Who we are
Tioga County Habitat for Humanity is an locally run affiliate of
Habitat for Humanity International. Since September 9, 1987 we have been working to eliminate substandard
housing in Tioga County, New York. We have built with families in Owego, Newark Valley, Candor,
and Berkshire in the Southern Tier of New York.
Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable
housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and no interest. The new home owner's
mortgage payments then go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses. Volunteers provide
most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors help by providing money and materials to build Habitat
houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor in 'sweat equity' into building
their homes and the homes of others.
The Vision and Mission of Habitat
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical
Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and to making
adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat is founded on
the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, decent, affordable
place to live in dignity and safety.
Habitat has an open-door policy. All who desire to be a part of this effort are welcome,
regardless of religious preference or background. Habitat for Humanity has always had a
policy of building with people in need regardless of race or religion, and we welcome volunteers
and supporters from all backgrounds.
The work of Habitat for Humanity is driven by the desire to support the community through
eliminating poverty housing. Habitat's mission and methods are predominantly derived from a few
key theological concepts: the necessity of putting faith into action, the "economics of Jesus"
and the "theology of the hammer."
